2010 Midwestern Regional Leadership Staff Meeting and College Brothers Retreat

The Midwestern Region held its Leadership Staff Meeting and College Brothers Retreat Summit the weekend of October 15 ~ 16, 2010 at the Louisville Downtown Marriott Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky (host site of the 79th Midwestern Regional Convention).

The weekend began with two outstanding workshop sessions. Bro. Robert E. Bedford, who is the region’s training and development coordinator, presented an engaging workshop called “The Truths about Leadership”, that focused on ten key areas that every Alpha man must possess. From there, Ms. Cornelia Shipley of 3C Consulting elevated the leadership conversation by having members interactively participate in honoring our legacy and how we can and must impact leadership, Alpha, and the 21st Century. Members left with an individual plan designed to successfully improve and influence outcomes in their personal life, career, and Alpha Phi Alpha.

Bro. Cameron M. Thierry, Midwestern Regional Asst. Vice President, also facilitated activities to foster and engage college brothers of the Midwestern region in the Introspection of Alpha. It was an opportunity for college brothers to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of fraternity values, attitudes, beliefs, and expectations. We also thank Bro. Evan J. Glover, Sigma Delta Elon University, who encouraged our college brothers to accept accountability for their academic excellence.

Brothers also had the opportunity for fellowship and experience what Louisville has to offer as the fraternity will be back to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of Alpha Lambda chapter in April 2011.

It is with great honor to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the “eighth house” of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Founded on February 21, 1910, Bro. Dr. Thomas Boger, Bro. Dr. Alexander C. Browne, Bro. Dr. Ormville Coles, Bro. Dr. Samuel Lecount Cook, Bro. Dr. Gordon Jackson, and Bro. Dr. Henry Howard Towles collectively embraced a vision of expanding Alpha Phi Alpha as the first chapter in the state of Illinois and in the city of Chicago.

Theta chapter holds historical significance within Alpha Phi Alpha by hosting the 7th General Convention, initiating prominent men like the Hon. Bro. William Dawson, former U.S. Congressman from Illinois and Bro. John H. Johnson, founder of the Johnson Publishing Company, and by having a founding member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Jewel Bro. Henry Arthur Callis, to serve as its chapter president.

We also congratulate all members who were initiated into Theta chapter on maintaining a consistency and building on a legacy that allowed this chapter to reach a significant milestone.

Thank you for supporting the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. by developing leaders, promoting brotherhood and academic excellence, and providing service and advocacy for our communities. Let’s lay the groundwork for another hundred years, one year at a time.

Midwestern Region Field Staff Leadership Summit

The Midwestern Region held its Field Staff Leadership Summit over the weekend of October 2 ~ 3, 2009 at the Dayton Marriott Hotel in Dayton, OH (host site of the 78th Midwestern Regional Convention). Regional staff members and field staff leaders such as District Directors, Area Directors, Alpha Advisors, and key chapter leaders such as; Chapter Presidents and Intake Coordinators attended the two day workshop sessions. Over two-hundred brothers were in attendance.

The workshop sessions focused on the duties and responsibilities necessary for field staff members to execute such as, a focus on the fundamentals of chapter and officer development for president and intake coordinator roles, a comprehensive review of the Membership Intake Process, the consequences of disciplinary matters and items related to protecting the fraternity, a focus on tools for academic readiness, and a focus on leadership traits to produce outstanding results. The Midwestern Region thanks the following brothers for their participation; Bro. William D. Lyle, Executive Director, Bro. Cory Anderson, Membership Director, Bro. Epsilon Chapter Centennial Celebration

The Midwestern Region recognized the 100th Anniversary of Epsilon chapter at the Seventy-seventh Midwestern Regional Convention in Oak Brook, Illinois. Epsilon chapter is known as the 5th House and was founded on April 10, 1909 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor was the First Midwestern Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the First historically black fraternity or sorority on Michigan’s campus.

Epsilon’s history includes; hosting Alpha Phi Alpha's Fourth General Convention in 1911, initiating Alpha Phi Alpha's Third General President, Bro. Frederick H. Miller, and the Sixteenth General President, Bro. Belford V. Lawson. The chapter received a proclamation and recognition and each member received an individual proclamation from the Midwestern region commemorating the occasion.

In addition, the chapter held activities on April 9 – 11, 2009 at the University of Michigan. General President Herman “Skip” Mason and Midwestern Regional Vice President Mark S. Tillman keynoted events during the weekend along with Wayne County Prosecutor of Detroit, Michigan, Miss Kym Worthy.

The Midwestern Region made a $500 contribution to the American Cancer Society during the Community Outreach Luncheon (second picture).

The Midwestern Region made a donation of $500 to raise funds in support of the Vertner Woodson Tandy Historical Marker. The brothers of Alpha Beta Lambda chapter, Lexington, KY, and their foundation embarked on an activity to place a highway marker at the boyhood home of Jewel Tandy. The marker was approved by the Kentucky Historical Society to acknowledge and recognize the accomplishments of native Lexingtonian and founding jewel of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

77th Midwestern Region Convention ~ Oak Brook Marriott (Part 1)

The 77th Midwestern Regional Convention was held on March 12-15, 2009 at the Oak Brook Hills Marriott Resort Hotel in Oak Brook, IL. Mu Mu Lambda, Mu Mu (Elmhurst College and Lewis University), and Pi Sigma (Aurora University) were the host chapters. Bro. Decature D. Tounsel was the convention chairman.

Prior to the start of the convention, the Board of Directors of Alpha Phi Alpha held its meeting to discuss the business of the fraternity and interview the top four candidates for the position of Executive Director.

Immediately following the Vice President’s Reception, there was an art show and poetry reading with featured artist, Bro. Charles Jean-Pierre, Theta ’02. The theme of the convention was “Developing Leaders”. It was focused on handling the challenges of leadership.

Featured speakers during the convention were the 33rd General President, Bro. Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr. (third picture) who was the keynote speaker at the Community Outreach Luncheon, Bro. Isaiah P. 2008 Midwestern Region Leadership Staff Meeting

The 2008 Midwestern Region Leadership Staff Meeting was held on October 17 – 18, 2008 at the Oak Brook Marriott Resort Hotel in Oak Brook, IL.

In addition to communicating the updates and directives to the leadership staff, there were two special activities. There was a “Table Top Talk” discussion where each table at the leadership breakfast discussed their most impacting leader. There was also a special brotherhood bonding exercise to reinforce the spirit of brotherhood among the leadership staff.

The campground of Lutherdale Bible Camp was the site for the second annual Alpha Phi Alpha District of Wisconsin Brotherhood Retreat. The brothers of the distinguished district, both college and alumni, gathered together for a weekend of bonding Friday August 23, 2008 in Elkhorn, WI.

As dusk fell in the open skies of the Wisconsin country side, several brothers from the active district chapters assembled themselves for a night of productive sessions, personal dialogue, and amusing icebreakers. Assistant District Director Brother Mike Montgomery, University of Wisconsin-Madison, led the evening with facilitation between sessions and breaks.
To kick off the festivities, the brothers took part in an icebreaker for the ages. Split into four groups, each cluster was assigned the task of constructing a district banner. What was to be included on the banner was the preference of the group, however, the banner had to be a collective illustration of what each group thought were the best qualities of the district.
After a brief intermission the retreat was called back to order and the brothers headed into the next session. This time split into two groups, each set formed a human knot. Unable to break hands, the object of the activity was to untangle the knot, ultimately leading back to a circle. The group that completed the task first won the challenge. After 45 minutes of trial and error, District Director Albert Smith stopped the activity and pronounced group number two the winners on the basis that they had untangled the most brothers.

The final session was entitled “Seven Minutes in the Golden Circle.” As the night came to a close the brothers of Wisconsin shared some intense and personal life stories with each other. Each person got the chance to share three moments that had a significant impact on his life and/or the lives of others. “I wanted to get to know brothers beyond the letters” said Mike Montgomery, Assistant District Director-Wisconsin. “I thought it was a great way for all of us to get to know each other on a more personal level.” The rest of the night was open for social activities and much needed rest.

Saturday 8/23/08
As the sun rose and the birds took their chirping post, Lutherdale Bible Camp came alive as students from various summer camps, such as marching band and cross country, began their morning with breakfast and musical routines. The brothers of Wisconsin however…were still asleep. Brother Kevin Newell, Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority, ZI SP 05, took it upon himself to wake up the entire district for breakfast. In a Spike Lee/School Daze moment, Brother Newell made it clear that we should all be up early for breakfast and not waste the district’s time. “I felt like breakfast was the most important bonding time and I wanted brothers to get the experience” said Newell. “I’ve had some life changing conversations over breakfast and I didn’t want to see this one go to waste.”

After breakfast, the brothers took part in two morning sessions in which everyone in the district was heavily involved. Activities included outdoor searches where brothers learned the importance of team work, political discussions, and a session on proper implementation of the Fraternity’s National Programs. After lunch the brothers heard from District Director Albert Smith who addressed each chapter on the importance of the retreat. “I wanted the brothers to understand the reason we put this retreat together” said Smith. “I think it’s important for brothers to get together for issues other than business and just spend some time with one another.”

As the 2008 retreat came to a close one thing was clear, the District of Wisconsin was one knot tighter in the rope of brotherhood. Through sessions, political debates, and good ole fashion conversation, the brothers of the Distinguished District of Wisconsin had the privilege of not only calling each other brothers but friends.

2007 Midwestern Region College Brothers Retreat
